Humanity is facing twin health and climate crises, and the burning of coal is one of the main culprits. It is an undeniable fact that support for coal in any one country is a health and climate liability for all, yet coal interests still have undue influence over politicians and markets. This has to change, and fast, if we are to save lives and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Civil society groups and citizens across Europe have been working together to help heal coal’s social, health, environmental, and economic damage. Given the unprecedented scale of the problems we face and the short timeframe we have to fix them, we are pooling our own time, energy, and resources in an unprecedented campaign spanning 28 countries to dramatically accelerate the transition to a better future for all, for a Europe Beyond Coal.

People across Europe overwhelmingly want the health, environmental, and employment benefits that come with switching from dirty coal, oil and gas to a universally accessible, affordable and renewably powered energy system and energy efficiency. National and regional leaders must get serious and develop fair and equitable transition plans that enable a Europe wide rapid coal phase out by 2030, while supporting communities and workers.

Together, we will ensure that this happens. A coal free Europe is inevitable, and coming fast. The sooner it happens the better the future will be for us all.
